U18-tyttömaajoukkueen kirje IIHF:lle

U18-tyttöjen MM-kisat Ruotsissa peruttiin koronapandemian vuoksi. SJRY on U18-tyttömaajoukkueen pelaajien pyynnöstä toimittanut heidän kirjeensä IIHF:lle.

U18-tyttöjen MM-kisat ovat mahdollisuus vaikuttaa omaan tulevaisuuteen urheilijana. MM-kisat ovat tärkeä askel huippu-urheilijan polulle ja menestykseen, sillä ne avaavat ovia kansainvälisiin sarjoihin. MM-kisat myös mahdollistavat pelaajien “löytämisen” ja sitä kautta muun muassa yliopistotarjouksien ja yhteistyösopimuksien saamisen. U18-tyttöjen MM-kisat ovat myös ainoat arvokisat tytöille ennen naisten maajoukkuetta. Osalle U18-kisat ovat mahdollisesti ainoa mahdollisuus edustaa omaa maataan arvokisoissa. 

Päätös peruuttaa kaikki tammikuun kisatapahtumat tuli tietoomme 23. joulukuuta, eli vain kaksi viikkoa ennen lähtöä Ruotsiin. Suomen U18-tyttöjen maajoukkue muiden maiden tyttömaajoukkueiden kanssa on erittäin pettynyt päätökseen peruuttaa kisat kokonaan jo toista vuotta peräkkäin.

Tilanne on kuitenkin tuttu, joten luulisi, että varasuunnitelma kisoja varten olisi olemassa. Miksi varasuunnitelmaa ei ollut? Tämänhetkinen maailmantilanne ei pitäisi tulla yllätyksenä, ei vaikka tilanne olisi mennyt parempaan suuntaan jo ennen omikronmuunnosta. IIHF ei ole millään tavalla osoittanut halua siirtää kisoja toiseen ajankohtaan ja mahdollisesti sijaintiin. Ymmärrämme syyt päätöksen takana, mutta päätös peruuttaa kisat sen sijaan että olisi suunnitelma kisojen siirtämiselle sai meidät tuntemaan olomme toisarvoisiksi. Miksi meille näin ainutlaatuisen ja tärkeän tapahtuman kohdalla mentiin jälleen kerran alimman aidan kautta?

Kansallisten jääkiekkoliittojen on aika vaatia parempaa kohtelua nais- ja tyttökiekolle. Ansaitsemme samanlaisen panostuksen kuin miehet ja pojat.

Vaadimme, että IIHF muiden kansallisten liittojen kanssa tekee yhteistyötä tyttöjen U18-kisojen siirtämiseksi toiseen ajankohtaan. Me ja tulevaisuuden tyttökiekkoilijat ansaitsemme sen. Teillä IIHF on vastuu näyttää esimerkkiä, kuinka naisurheilua viedään eteenpäin.

The U18 Women's World Championships in Sweden were canceled due to a corona pandemic. At the request of the players, SJRY (The Finnish Ice Hockey Players’ Association) has forwarded their letter to the IIHF.

The U18 women’s World Championships are an opportunity that affect one’s future as an athlete. They are an important stepping stone on the way to the top and to a successful career because they help open doors to international stages. They are the place for young players to showcase their talent, to be recruited to universities and the biggest window to be seen by possible future sponsors. 
Furthermore, the U18 women’s World Championships are the only Championship tournament for girls in any age group before entering the Women’s national team. Thus, for some, it is possibly their only chance to represent their country at an international stage. 

We got to know about the decision to cancel all championship tournaments in January on December 23rd, right before Christmas and two weeks before our departure to Sweden. We, the Finland U18 women’s national team, along with the other countries’ national teams are extremely disappointed that this decision happened for a second time in a row.

We have been here before as the 2021 World Championships was cancelled. Why is there no plan B? The situation around the world should not come as a surprise to anyone, even if things were getting a little better before the omicron happened. The IIHF has in no ways shown their interest and will to postpone the Championship to a later date and possibly a different place, if needed. We understand the reasons behind the decision, but cancelling the tournament instead of having plans to reschedule it made us feel second best.  Why are we cutting corners with such a unique and important tournament for us?

It is time for national ice hockey associations to demand better treatment for girl’s and women’s hockey. We deserve the same investment as boys and men get. 

We demand that IIHF works in co-operation with national ice hockey associations to postpone the Championship tournament and find a date for this tournament to happen. Girls today and in the future deserve it. The IIHF has the responsibility to show the way to grow women’s sports.
